I have been tutoring on a casual basis for 3 years and have learnt a lot about how best to improve individual language skills: be they for an exam or otherwise.
I use a mix of media and approaches to keep students engaged and will adapt each lesson to each student as I understand everyone has different needs. There is also a range of sources to be used to accommodate all levels of language proficiency. If a student has SpLDs or other additional needs, they will be well looked after, as I have ADHD myself and clearly understand how these difficulties can affect learning.
Likewise, I will be prioritising more modern sources (for comprehension exercises) to keep younger students interested and to differentiate my lessons from school lessons. Equally, these will be more relevant to someone looking to learn French for work or living abroad.
Each lesson will be divided up into 3 sections of twenty minutes to keep students engaged and to cover a wide range of skills. Obviously, if a student struggles or needs to prioritise certain skills those will be prioritised in each lesson as we figure out collaboratively where they need to improve, and then I can personalise each lesson to their individual needs. However, in every lesson, there will be at least one grammar point, and one opportunity to practice listening and speaking, so the student can feel more confident in their language ability.
I will use the first session to assess each student to not only assess each student's proficiency but which styles of teaching they respond to so that I can start to create a personalised lesson plan suited to them and their needs.
