I like to talk to the students and see where they lack confidence. I believe it's important for the student to feel empowered and believe they have the skills to tackle any question even if the answer does not seem immediately obvious. We'd practice critical thinking and unfamiliar questions around their exam specifications and go into more depth thann would be taught in school if it would aid a deeper understanding of content.
One think I like to encourage also is finding the areas of a subject the student can truly enjoy and facilitate that learning.
I've been both a tutee and a tutor so I have experience from both sides of the dynamic and I found it's best to cultivate a relaxed environment where no questions are considered "stupid".
