My approach to teaching is highly personalised to the specific needs and strengths/weaknesses of the student. I also am very sensitive to what each student is really keen to learn and how they need to use their English. If I am dealing with a school age child, I will use materials which are familiar from the classroom but also encourage them to think about the language as a real life tool and not something to be pulled from a text book. For a professional wanting to work and socialise in the UK, I will tailor lessons to their line of work, their peer group and their personal interests.
I use repetition, alot of conversation and eliciting as well as tools like reading comprehension, games, short tests and roleplay to make the lessons as dynamic as possible to avoid boredom. I have a particular understanding of the difficulties faced by speakers of Romance languages like French and Italian as I speak those languages myself and can gently steer students clear of common mistakes and mispronunciation.
Students have said that I sparked their interest in the language and that the versatile way in which I approach teaching has been particularly useful. I also teach French to GCSE standard should that be of interest.
