My previous experience includes: working as a teaching assistant in a primary school, a maths tutor in a secondary school and hosting classes to help fellow university students. I tailor my teaching style to suit the student and will follow their lead as to how they prefer to learn however, if the student is unsure I tend to use the following structure. A brief presentation about the topic in question followed by any questions, having them complete example questions and then working through these questions together to correct any errors and praise any questions they got right. Other times, if I need to have a better understanding of which sections in particular a student is having difficulty with I will have them complete a few questions so that I can focus the rest of the lesson on areas of weakness in the topic. This I also find helps to boost the student's confidence as they realise it's not the whole topic they are struggling with but rather only small sections which makes them less overwhelmed and more willing to learn. I don't expect the student to be an expert at the end of the session, only that they have a more clear understanding about the topic. If this takes multiple sessions, then that's ok as I know how difficult some topics can be and I would not want the student to feel pressured and unable to ask all of the questions they have because they feel rushed. I understand that students learn at different paces and I believe that those who take longer to learn should not be viewed as at a disadvantage.
