Having done some online tutoring during Covid, I have learnt how to deliver lessons virtually whilst ensuring the students stay engaged. Typically my lessons tend to be question based; On our first lesson I will find a practice paper that fits the student's specification and level, and I try to get the student to work through these questions independently, so I can identify their strengths and weaknesses. If the student is struggling then I will step in and prompt them to get to the answer so they can see how this type of question may be answered correctly. Once we complete this initial observation, I will then use my resources to find relevant question packs for the student to work through, predominantly focusing on the areas of weakness I have previously identified. Depending on the student, they may be able to work through with little guidance required, but some may require more help. I typically will use visual and verbal methods of teaching, but if the student has a preference of learning strategies, maybe through watching videos, I can also produce work that fits this.
I want the student to feel that I am easier to reach than their teacher may be as I see myself as quite a chatty and friendly person, so hopefully if there are any concerns or questions they won't be afraid to ask me for guidance. Hopefully in this more 'casual' environment, the student will feel more relaxed and be open to attempting questions, even if they aren't 100% sure as this will help their development.
