I studied vocals as my first instrument at Perth UHI. I explored multiple learning and teaching strategies throughout my time there. I believe every person is capable of becoming a great singer, they just need the right training. Each lesson plan is unique to the student and their goals; I start by asking about each students’ interests and what genres they enjoy in order to better be able to recommend songs and techniques to them. During the first lesson I usually go over some basics of singing techniques and ask the student what their goals are for the lessons (even if it’s just for fun!). From there either we will go over song choices the student has brought or I’m able to suggest things to try.
I have sung in choirs and solo, as well as a range of genres including rock, pop, jazz, and musical theatre. This experience means I have first-hand knowledge of different musical approaches and dynamics. I will also provide the student with sheet music as well as a playlist and listening recommendations for them to take home and practice with. I aim to provide a relaxed environment where students do not feel afraid to ask questions or try new things. Singing is a personal journey and it’s important to me that a student feels they have gained something every lesson. I aim to bring each student from their comfort zone by enacting techniques to breakdown any mental blocks that may be holding them back from their singing potential.
