I'm Emilie, a current year 13 student who is passionate about learning and wants to pass this on to other young people, regardless of their academic ability.
As an aspiring teacher, I've had work experience online and in classrooms at how to manage an educational environment, with a focus on lesson planning which is extremely valuable to tutoring. Similarly, I am particularly interested in those with Special Educational Needs, poor mental health or those who simply dont enjoy school. I didnt have a good experience through my high school journey but I learnt lessons about how to cope and pass exams regardless of this which inspired my goal of being a teacher, so I can break the cycle of hating education and help those who need it to enjoy learning.
Generally, my preferred teaching methods include a powerpoint as a base but I prefer to let the student be in charge of what they feel is valuable, as they know themselves best and to be a good student you have to know the techniques that help you as an individual learn most effectively. As a result of this I would tailor the basic lesson plan based on what they feel they need.
For example, some students prefer the gamified style of learning which is effective as a recall activity and I would facilitate that with a focus on quizlet and kahoot, plus some less well-known resources online. Also, there is a difference between those who want to focus on learning on content, and those who need to focus on exam techniques/how to answer the questions effectively- this is extremely important and will play into my plans. Furthermore, I know that external issues can have a big impact on a students capacity to learn so i would also be supportive with any issues or questions, regardless of whether they were academic, social, emotianl or anything else.
Personally, I believe that the best method of exam preparation is practise questions; it takes away some of the fear in the exam hall and proves to students that they have what it takes to answer any question they might face. Therefore, I would always provide practise questions that I would mark before our next lesson.
