A great option for pupils in or leading up to exam years in Scotland, I study French and Spanish at Edinburgh University and have tutored family friends, as well as achieved A grades in languages at school. I remember clearly the curriculum and in fact still have many resources handy so relating exactly to what the pupil needs will be very easy. I find that for languages, often working physically with verb tables, for instance, laid out and visible helps children to understand patterns and develop accurate usage and fluency as well as quicker comprehension. Languages would be based around each child, I am familiar with the more challenging parts of languages, however as soon as a child succeeds in understanding one part, they may have questions on another so I am ready to adapt lessons to be entirely based around the child’s concern at that time. I feel in preparation for exams, clarity over the skills needed for each section (reading, writing, listening and oral presentations), is useful and I have learned many techniques for quick memorisation of frequently used or useful phrases likely to appear in a reading or listening paper, and the planning and some advanced phrasing ideal to elevate a grade on a writing paper. I understand how nerve racking oral presentations in foreign languages can be, however having consistent non marked help worked incredibly for me and practice from spontaneous questions which I have banks of make a world of difference and can lead your child to an A grade in a speaking exam.
