I am currently a Geology Master’s student in my final year at the University of Bristol. My teachings have spanned many topics including mineralogy, petrology, sedimentology, and tectonics – mineralogy is a particular interest of mine. Compared to other cohorts, Geology is a relatively small study group, with only around sixty students in my undergraduate years, and less than ten doing a Master’s at Bristol. I would like to see a change to the number of students starting Geology and finishing the course!

For many industrial jobs, Earth sciences is vital. It provides an understanding of long-term processes like climate change and continental drift, short-term problems like mass movement and resource reserves, and the interpretation skills from field work. Encouraging more students to learn about Geology and earth sciences may help to nurture a desire to possibly pursue further knowledge and careers in the field. Mineral resources, Earth systems, and geophysical surveys are only some of the important sectors of Earth sciences that one may want to pursue for a career, and I would very much like to teach those subjects. This in turn would be a crucial investment as we try to develop a more sustainable future.

I am a visual learner, so I enjoy worksheets and specialised tasks for learning. These sorts of tasks also lend themselves to kinaesthetic (hands-on) and auditory learners, so I believe these tasks will be accessible to everyone -- I also really enjoy making worksheets, too! I want students to learn about Geology and have fun doing it. I have experience with game making, writing, and digital art, so it is no problem for me to make a worksheet. Through studying Geology, I have had the privilege of attending field trips across beautiful areas of England, Scotland, and Greece to investigate their rocks and beautiful landscapes. I have worked with my peers in small teams and demonstrators from the University of Bristol to understand and learn. Geology is not just a ‘textbook subject’, but something that requires interpretation, perseverance, and cooperation in the field.
