I have had 10 years experience of studying Spanish, achieving a grade 9 in GCSE and an A* grade in A Level.
I am currently a university student going into final year, who has just completed a year abroad which included teaching English to children in Spain, and a future career that really interests me is becoming a Modern Languages teacher.
For me, the aim of the lessons would be to really break down topics that often people struggle with or find difficult to make it more understandable and enjoyable. Often people see learning languages as quite a scary, difficult thing, but if simplified and made interesting, it's a different story! I would start by gauging the current level of the student by giving them work of mixed ability, and see where the student wants to reach to with these tutoring lessons.
Each lesson would comprise of going over exercises that I set the student, which they would have had to complete prior to the lesson. This is to consolidate their learning and to clarify if they've got a good understanding, or if this area needs a bit more work.
In lessons we will work our way through different grammar topics, incorporating with new vocabulary in the form of exercises, which will help build up their bank of knowledge. After all, grammar and vocab do go hand in hand! Students will also be given the chance to translate sentences that include the grammar and vocab just learnt. Most importantly at the end, we would review and consolidate what we have just learnt and set a series of exercises to complete for the next lesson.
If the student is doing exams such as GCSE and A Level, I will of course teach material that follows the exam specifications, and if students would like to cover an area in particular which they are struggling with, I will not hesitate to help. Students may also want conversation practice, which is also very important to knowing a language.
