I mainly tutor English Language and Literature for KS3, GCSE and A Level students. I find that discussion works best - while I am happy to make pieces of writing, I would rather tackle whatever the student is struggling with and discuss what they are finding hard. I try to avoid "homework" appreciating that students often have enough from school although I am happy to review written work and assist with homework if the student requires that.
I have an undergraduate degree in English and Education and a Masters in Shakespeare and Education. I'm not afraid to adapt to the student's needs and have had them acting out scenes in their living room to understand stage craft. Likewise, I have spent many sessions also having discussions, unpicking structure, language and form, if that is what suits the students style better.
I have tutored a wide range of texts including (in recent years) Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, A Christmas Carol, Lord of the Flies, A View from the Bridge, Jekyll and Hyde and both AQA poetry strands.
I also believe English is a method of viewing the world - and to understand the text, you need to understand the world when the text was written. Due to this, some sessions may appear to focus more on history, politics, sociology or psychology! Students have commented that they often gain extra knowledge about these subjects as we unpick and discuss various texts.
