I usually start my tutoring sessions with a diagnostic test so that I have a better idea of where the student't understanding of the subject is, and whether there are any problem areas that need some extra attention.
Once that is covered, I'll make sure to go over the current topics being taught in school to ensure it's all locked in, before anticipating what will be learned in future classes so that the student can go in feeling prepared and ready.
This will be supplemented with regular quizzes and tests so that we can stay on top of any gaps in knowledge.
I have some experience in tutoring students from Year 9 to A-Levels, and was consistent in my efforts to ensure their knowledge and understanding of the topics and any relevant further study.
