English literature allows us to think critically and understand the world around us through forming our own opinions around and through learning about another persons experience. Although that’s the fun part, I am really passionate about pupils learning the structure of exams as well as the content. In order to achieve any grade, from a pass to an A*, understanding what is being asked of you is at the core of my lessons and own belief in exam based education. Applying this should allow anyone to achieve the grade they wish to gain. To do this, I typically review and break down the mark scheme relevant to the pupils school, and will assess it myself looking at the assessment objectives, and then devise a way to teach around them. The pupil being aware of the assessment objectives is also extremely important as it aids their own revision, allowing them to complete independent study as they will know what areas of study they are weaker or stronger in.

I am in my final year of an English literature and Film Studies degree, and am in the process of applying to become a secondary school teacher from next September. I have mentored and tutored younger students in the past, and have a strong passion for education and allowing others to see the importance of texts (from literature, music, films, even to adverts like this!) and how they shape our understanding of history, but also equip us with the skills to be able to critically analyse and think independently, moulding our own views on the world around us. English literature isn’t just books, it’s everything around us, and the understanding of such is where higher grades tend to be achieved. The ability to be able to provide these tools through literature to a pupil is an honour, and something I look forward to doing more and more in my career.
