I have worked in higher education for the past twenty three years teaching at Sociology at undergraduate and post graduate level and for the past five years have taught history History A-Level to students 1:1, privately. I tailor my tutorials to the student’s personal learning needs linked to the Learning Objectives they need to evidence in the exam and in their coursework . No matter how academically able a student is, research (Bacchus et, al. 2020) has identified that, after 40 minutes, a student's concentration wanes (particularly when studying online) and they do not retain a critical understanding of the material being covered. To address this, I breakdown the 1-hour sessions into 15-minute segments, interspersed with self-directed activities and quizzes, to make the sessions fun and stimulating for the students, and these are linked to the Learning objectives A01,A02,A03 and for 'homework' I get the student to complete a session 'Reflective Diary' identifying how each session achieves these Learning Objectives. this is to build up a repository of the student's critical analytical skills. This is all underpinned by extensive specialist knowledge of the subject areas of A level History and Sociology especially, the AQA curricula. A positive by-product in working in the Asia-Pacific Rim for five years, was that I developing skills in teaching English for academic writing purposes, for students whose first language was not English. My particular strength is equipping students with exam techniques and skills to attain a level 5 or level 4 grade in the exam.
