Teaching privately is a very subjective undertaking. Each student has their own pace, background, way of learning and strengths. When a new student comes up to me, I want to know their reason for being there, and what they want to take out from the lessons, because people have different desires and objectives and my goal is to understand those reasons so we can work together for the growth of the student on this instrument.
I love teaching often through songs, because I believe that playing drums alongside songs, will help a student learn how to keep time better, learn to stay in the pocket and get used to hearing a full band mix and being able to distinguish different instruments and learn to hear them, to be be able to play alongside them better, which ultimately translates into a live band setting, to learn to stay in your own lane and learn to be the foundation of the mix and not try to be everything and everywhere.
I love working with the student on their goals and see where each one wants to go, and learn about their genres of music and challenge them to become better in what they might already know, or are yet to learn. Music is an amazing tool to learn and develop our minds and hearts to feel and understand ourselves and the world we live in better, and taking it a step further, learning an instrument next to music, will even further develop that journey.
