Tell the groups the value of group work by sharing experiences and knowledge and lots of different views. Group work will not work if the students do not have some previous knowledge. I ensure learners have a small or large reserve of knowledge to draw on before choosing Group Work.
Structured group work could involve setting a task in small groups with particular roles for group members like leader, recorder, time-keeper, presenter – if they should tell their peers about their answers. You may need to summarise the answers on a whiteboard, or electronically if they need notes for revision.
Unstructured Group Work, would be when you ask students to mention answers for a few minutes. Usually, this type of group work breaks up a large span of teacher talk.
Work stations, is a really good idea if you have a large group and want to use smaller groups. It takes a bit of time and coordination to use the whole classroom space. Set up different tasks at certain points in the room. You need to be quite organised to use work stations and may require a little more time for change overs. Giving small groups time at each station to complete tasks.
With guided studies and inquiry based learning, you can prepare handouts or online documents with instructions, or gaps for the students to complete. Guided studies can be set individually or in small groups and pairs. Guided studies can be modified slightly for different levels of learners, to give room for differentiated learning.
