I am a native speaker of British English and a tutor with experience as a Senior Lecturer in English and drama (performing arts) teaching at a higher education institution in Mauritius. I have a PhD in Ecolinguistics and Education, a Masters in English Literature and a first class honours degree in English Language with Linguistics.
In this higher education role, I taught certificate, diploma, undergraduate and postgraduate levels as well as short courses for adults. I have worked as a Learning Mentor in a secondary school and sixth form in South London as well as teaching Business English at Rushmore Business School and the University of Mauritius. Additionally, I have taught English for academic purposes and for academic reading and writing.
Using a holistic and multimodal approach to teaching English, I enjoy supporting learners in developing practical conversation skills by engaging in fun discussions on diverse topics and using a variety of resources online such as social media, blogs and podcasts. I use simple textual teaching aids and MS PowerPoint to provide visual support as needed.
I have published peer-reviewed academic articles and book chapters in addition to being the 2019 winner of the international Edouard Maunick poetry prize, and have experience as a performance poet and workshop facilitator. I integrate creative writing and expression into how I teach, as well as focusing on these as a subject area. I also make use of creative drama techniques, mime, movement and music in my teaching and learning approach.
