Maths is a language that everyone speaks - it is the desire to simplify complex and boring tasks so that we have more time for the fun things in life.
My aim is help you enjoy learning Maths and give you a real understanding of what you have learnt and why it is important.
I am an expert at filling in the gaps that never made sense so you feel on top of what you are learning.
I will teach you to approach each problem with a mentality that says:
"If someone else can solve it so can I",
If we don't get an "answer" the journey there is more revealing than the destination.
I adapt my teaching to your pace and way of learning, be it visual, through stories or with symbols.
I give constant feedback and short exercises to reinforce what you have learnt.
I encourage you to write your own mathematical problems for other people to solve.
I believe in deriving the mathematics from first principles rather than just learning a formula by heart.
I encourage the use of everyday technology to support your thinking, but believe that basic mental agility with numbers is essential so as not to get lost in the process.
I will teach you some tricks to be able to do large calculations in your head.
There are only six multiplications in the times table that need to be memorised - the rest are repetitions, reflections or close friends.
I have been teaching in schools for over 30 years and first started tutoring when I was 15.
I have worked in the English, Danish and German school systems and have taken good ideas from all three.
I went to Oxford to read Maths at 17 - you could too - its more about desire than so-called intelligence.
