The first thing I do is familiarise myself with the material the student is working with. For more formal exam boards, I stick to what the board recommends to ensure the best results in exams, and for more casual class time, I like to find what areas need work. Connecting difficult concepts to something the student finds more comfortable is my speciality. Changing perspective can help a lot, and especially in mathematics.
