The method I use often varies per person to cater to specific needs and wants. My method consists of creating a PowerPoint slide stating the key points of the topic we will cover in the lesson and talk through them. For me, application and practice is the best way to learn. After learning the key points, working through questions together allows us to see how the information we learned can be applied in context. I often recommend writing notes that can be used to revise later on and used for recap.
To consolidate what we learnt in the session, I will ask for a brief summary of what was covered and what needed reinforcing for the next session. This gives time to reflect on their perceived performance and a better insight into what they think. I often recommend writing flash cards on formulas they are likely to forget or think they are the most important. As time passes, the sessions can be tailored for their wants and needs.
I’ve tutored nursery school children to year 11 students, some with educational needs such as dyslexia. I’ve always had a strong ability for maths and was able to break it down in ways it made sense. Working with different age group and different academic capabilities has made develop the ability to simplify concepts in a certain way for certain people. Using different learning methods which is most suitable, such as visual or sound, allows for more productive and effective learning throughout our sessions together.
