I've been teaching for several years now, working with students in both group and one-on-one settings, including online tutoring sessions. I understand that during group sessions, some students may find certain concepts challenging and struggle to keep up. Supporting these students is essential, and I have several strategies to ensure they stay engaged and progress in their learning.
First, I always focus on creating a positive and supportive learning environment, where students feel comfortable asking questions and expressing their needs. For instance, when I taught Mathematics and Life Skills as Head of Department at Curro Langebaan, I made it a priority to build rapport with my students and encourage open communication. This approach allowed me to understand where each student was in their learning journey and helped me tailor support for those needing extra assistance.
When it comes to specific strategies, one technique I’ve found effective is using differentiated instruction. I adapt lessons based on each student's learning pace and abilities. For example, in my role at Jurie Hayes Primary School, I frequently worked with students who had varying levels of understanding in Social Science and English. By incorporating visuals, hands-on activities, and simplified explanations, I helped students who were struggling build a stronger foundation in these subjects.
I also believe in providing one-on-one support when needed. In my tutoring practice, I often work with students who face unique challenges in Mathematics and Science. By breaking down complex concepts into manageable steps, I ensure they gain confidence in their abilities. For instance, when preparing a student for exams, I teach study techniques that match their learning style, enabling them to approach their studies with clarity and confidence.
Lastly, regular feedback is essential. I make sure to give constructive feedback that celebrates students' progress while addressing areas for improvement. This helps them recognize their growth and motivates them to keep improving.
