I like to start by assessing how comfortable students feel in their chosen subject and tailor my teaching approach individually for each student. Next I go through content, asking questions to understand how well they know topics and spending a little longer if the topic is difficult. Usually topics can take from 1 to 3 lessons to fully complete but I always make sure to end the lessons at a suitable point, to prevent confusion and add excitement for the next lesson! At the end, I like to go over exam-style questions. This is a big part of exam preparation so spending 15-20 minutes at the end of each lesson on questions can really go a long way!
I’ve tutored previously in Maths and English at Kumon, where I focused on teaching children how to read and write. I also have experience in tutoring GCSE trilogy science, where I used the above method and it worked wonderfully! I tailored my approach to each lesson by asking my student what she wanted to go over specifically and finding and completing relevant exam-style questions. It’s so rewarding to see students’ progress over the course of a few months and makes me love teaching.
