I have tutored for over 5 years now I like the specialised approach so I start each student by doing a regular test for their age group and seeing what the results are. Including topics from the whole syllabus to get a grasp of where about the child is in their learning. From there for example if they had two sessions a week 1 hour would be spent on going through the normal syllabus step by step doing practice papers and fun activities to get them more excited about learning with the stop watch, talk time, quiz let games and many others. Then the other hour will be spent on specialised work for example if the child is stuck on time focus solely on that for multiple weeks until a clear understanding is developed and practice papers to condense.
