Hi there! My name's David and I've been working in the language industry since graduating with an MA (with distinction) in translation studies 7 years ago. I've got a passion for languages which has taken me all over Europe.
I previously worked for a year as a foreign language assistant in two German secondary schools - teaching small group lessons and helping students with exam prep. I've also worked for the charity Debate Mate (a sister organisation to Teach First) - teaching public speaking skills to students in areas of high child poverty. On top of this I have over 300 hours' experience of tutoring in business German, where I make use the specialist linguistic knowledge I've gained as a translator of financial, marketing and legal texts.
My teaching approach is collaborative - I discuss learning objectives with the student and base my lessons on what they find engaging, as well as their strengths and weaknesses. My lesson plans are flexible and determined by the student's progress, focusing in on areas they find difficult while making sure the pace is not too overwhelming. I find it is important to vary methods, incorporating fun activities that encourage students to speak, creating listening materials relevant to student goals and interests, as well as using more traditional comprehension, grammar and writing exercises. Through this, I aim to create a language learning experience that allows my students to reach their goals and gain a balanced, high level of competence in German.
