Every great lesson must have a clear aim and a set of measurable objectives. So I always start by making sure these are clear and well understood. There's always a fun starter, followed by the core content of the lesson. At the end there is a wrap up feedback session with any follow-on work for the next lesson clearly identified.
My style is light and conversational with plenty of interaction. We learn best when there is fun and the topics under discussion are related to the things which the student is personally interested in. There are often games and quizzes, with interesting content, sometimes taken from outside of any formal curriculum.
I am also open to teaching in pairs or small groups, making sure each participant is engaging fully.
As strange as it may sound, I encourage all of my students to 'make as many mistakes' as possible. We actually learn very little by getting everything right all of the time. This helps build what is called 'The Growth Mindset'. It develops an internal motivation for the student which helps them get past the barriers to learning, most of which are a matter of attitude.
As a tutor and teacher, I have always worked to uplift the morale of my students. It is never a matter of one person knowing (the tutor) and the other ( the student) not knowing. We are in it together, sharing the experience. A teacher who cannot learn actually cannot teach.
