Being tutored myself at a young age, I find the technique of reading contents of a textbook out loud and explaining the topic to be ineffective in optimal learning.
In my experience, the use of PowerPoint presentations with a breakdown of the subject matter has been successful. Most notably with diagrams, pictures and charts illustrating ideas and concepts. Being a science major and studying a 4-year course at the University of Reading, I found the use of picture aids very useful.
Small tests/questions at the end of each lesson also have a great impact on solidifying what was learnt. This will be conducted for 5 minutes at the end of each lesson.
