I have a great deal of experience in Pastoral care and used to work as a Learning Mentor - this is where I developed my conversational style of teaching - drawing my own school experience and often using the life stories of my peers as a means of teaching moral lessons; Doing so allows me to 'switch gears' between the written lesson plan and a more fluid style which has been praised by students and teachers alike.
I find it useful to bring historical literature into the present and often frame learning concepts in contemporary ways - ie: finding comparable ideas in pop culture or using current affairs and real-life events to show how language and literacy can be learned an used in a variety of ways - I have found that this really solidifies the learning of the students.
