I have a passion for games and wrote my dissertation in the mathematics behind some chess based board games. I love incorporating games and game mechanics into my teaching and finding ways to turn unfamiliar mathematical concepts into interactive journeys, often by playing games with my students, to allow them to have a deeper connection and understanding of difficult topics.

I believe in equipping my students with the tools and techniques to accomplish their goals effectively, be it; standardised tests, admissions to school or universities or simply to gain a deeper understanding and confidence for the subject. My lessons are tailored to the need of the particular student but often will start with a big problem that the student will be able to solve by the end of the lesson, followed by some exploration into their intuition for the ideas behind the problem. Developing on those ideas with examples, question, explanations and techniques, and finally building back up to hopefully have the student solve the difficult problem from the beginning. With some homework to allow for the ideas to settle in.

Mathematics is a subject that is best studied in a hands on way and fortunately it is malleable enough to be shaped into a form that connects with each particular student. Many students connect with mathematical topics in a more visual way and others in a more formulaic way. My computing background allows me to create bespoke pieces of software to help my students, be it mathematical animations to help visualise or a simple game based on a topic we are learning. Each student requires their own structure and the benefit of tutoring is we have the time and space to facilitate that.
