I love creating a fun environment, creating creative content and incorporating art and other subjects into the lessons as well. As a past student myself, I had to write plenty of essays, using MLA and APA format. These formats can be taught to the older student population as well. I tend to choose reading material that suits the student's personality. I'd like to know more about my students and engage in conversation to get a better understanding of who they are, that way it helps me to plan or assess if need be.
I also will use audio or visuals or graphs to help guide students as I work at their pace. I do not like to bombard students with loads of information or work at once, as this is not the way to learn. We all learn differently and at our on pace.
I have a son who is attending a university at this moment and will be graduating next year. I have worked with him as well but left much of it to many of his instructors, who did a phenomenal job working with him. Key is to have a great connection and relationship with your students.
