I am a student of English Literature at the university of Newcastle, have experience tutoring at GCSE level and received an A in A-level English literature.
My teaching style will always depend on the student: what works best for them. For that reason I will always want to get to know a bit about the student first so I can adapt my teaching approach to what they need.
I understand from first hand experience the difficulties of losing your confidence in a subject and how that can impact not only your grades but your mental health. Encouragement and positivity are essential in creating an environment where learning can be effective and enjoyable, this is always my focus!
However, a basic structure to my lessons will be to pick a focus (whether that be a topic like poetry or a skill like essays and persuasive writing) and then 1. Explore how to approach it (mentally and literally) 2. Look at an example 3. Apply it and finally 4. Discuss.
Although this is the basic structure I find to be effective, these sessions are for the student and therefore I will always be fully adaptable to what will be most beneficial for them.
In the past I have scratched the plan entirely and spent the session looking through an essay they just got back or consolidating knowledge from a class that day.
My aim is to make English feel possible, and to help students feel confident in their abilities so that they are in the right mindset to learn and to improve.
