Qualified Science teacher with two years experience teaching Y7-9 Science in Birmingham. I like to take a more holistic approach to teaching by building individual connections with students. I like to guide students by asking questions that lead them to the correct answer before practicing what we have learned over time. An average lesson will be fairly consistent with some wiggle room to suit the individual student. Our lesson will start with a 5 minute do now activity. This will start the tutor session strong as the students brain will immediately be in the mode of learning. These questions will start of relatively easy and get more difficult as the student progresses. The majority of the tutor session will consist of a continuous three step journey in learning. First, a short exposition of the content we are learning through visual and auditory presentation. Second in this journey we will answer retrieval questions. Thirdly, the student will complete a series of independent practice questions to consolidate this information. This three-step journey is repeated multiple times to prevent cognitive overload. This is where students are given too much information to tackle and that information fails to reach their long term memory by the end. To wrap up the session it would be nice for the student to ‘teach me’ what they have learned, this way I can continuously alter and improve my lessons for the individual I am teaching. In the final 2 minutes the pupil will answer ‘exit ticket’ questions to show me what of the major parts of the lesson they have grasped.
