I have an undergraduate and masters in Classics. My expertise is the Roman Empire while being quite competent at Greek History. I believe all lessons are best when students engage with the material ahead of each lesson, this encourages the students to make points, ask questions, and engage with others throughout the lesson. Most importantly, it makes the students comfortable with the topic, and thereby, making sure each lesson is known to them, and not needing as many notes from the lesson. When students focus too much on taking notes, I find that it does not allow them to hear the actual lesson being discussed.
