Trumpet, piano, or theory tuition tailored to your needs. The fundamentals of an instrument may be the same, but your way of learning them is personal. I do not believe in a one size fits all approach. Instead, we will work according to your needs, at your pace. If you need to study for your ABRSM exam, we will tailor our studies accordingly. If you just want to learn music without pursuing grades, we will design a course of action just for you.
My approach to teaching music starts with the fundamentals, after which the student decides which direction they would like to take:
o Fundamentals: which covers basic playing, note names, scales, keys and basic harmony.
o Counterpoint, covering writing for two to four voices, with analysis of music literature to aid understanding.
o Formal analysis, using the tools from fundamental music theory to understand how musical pieces work, from classical works to popular songs.
o Reading chord symbols from popular, rock, or jazz sheet music. You do not have to learn counterpoint or formal analysis to read chords. In fact, once you have a firm grasp of the fundamentals, you can start learning chord symbols.
I believe creating your own learning material through the guidance of a tutor is the most effective way to learn. In our lessons we will use pencil and paper to write out our lessons (or use the online tools provided), after which you will be given a handout to reinforce the material, which will be checked at the next lesson. If you are studying for an ABRSM exam, we will cover the material they provide and design practice exercises to reinforce their lessons.
In our first lesson we will talk about your musical interests, goals, and knowledge. Based on this conversation I will propose how we go about achieving your goals. Once we agree what works best for you, I will design a custom lesson plan for our first full lesson.
In our first full lesson I will introduce the topic and I will guide you through writing our exercises, stopping to answer any questions or to make sure the material is understood, and to address any concerns you may have. At the end of the lesson, I will provide a handout explaining the material we covered, as well as an exercise sheet to help learn the material covered, and discuss what we will do in our following lesson.
