I have loved singing all my life, and my passion for choral singing began in Cantamus Girls’ Choir, which gave me the opportunity to compete in and win prestigious choral competitions, learn complex repertoire and develop the discipline of a rigorous rehearsal schedule. I have made various television appearances including Blue Peter, Songs of Praise and BBC3 Flashmob Opera; taken part in commercial recordings, some of which reached number two in the classical charts. I have performed in such prestigious venues as the Royal Albert and Bridgewater Halls. As a soloist I have sung roles in opera companies in the North West and London and many wedding venues. as a teacher I have over 15 years experience in private tuition including 3 years in the classroom.
I have a strong connection to Liverpool, as alumni of the University, a long-term resident in the city and a regular participant in Merseyside’s vibrant cultural life. I am a current member of the Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Choir, offering me a vital insight into the organization and its choral heritage. My involvement with the Liverpool Philharmonic has afforded me the opportunity of working with many prestigious singers and conductors, something that I consider paramount to musical development.
I have a wide experience of working with children and young people, as a private singing tutor and choral director. I have extensive knowledge of vocal technique and my approach is based on an understanding of the anatomy and physiology of voice production. I am proficient in the Kodaly method, a technique I find invaluable when teaching my private students. I gained valuable experience conducting, as director of the Liverpool University Chamber Choir.
I teach from home as well as peripatetically (in students homes).
All genres covered including Popular Song, Classical, Opera and Musical Theatre.
I believe passionately in the value of music education. Without the inspirational commitment of music teachers, conductors and directors, my own interest in music may not have blossomed. I believe music is a key educational tool, developing social skills, emotional expression, physical coordination and stimulating the intellect. Research has shown that a structured musical education has a profound beneficial effect across all educational areas. My career is built upon putting this philosophy into practice. I am a calm, confident person and excellent communicator using my enthusiasm to inspire both individuals and ensembles. I have a strong work ethic, and give great attention to detail in all that I do. I am an efficient manager and work well within deadlines, keeping cool under pressure whilst enabling my singers to reach their full potential.
