I have over 20 years experience in teaching dance having gained graduate and associate teaching qualifications. My teaching ethos is one of inclusiveness with a supportive and nurturing style. Students will improve not only technical skills but gain in confidence, creativity, awareness, respect, dedication and resilience.
The structure of my practical classes is one of a methodical yet versatile approach, beginning with a warm up designed to improve all aspects needed for dance combined with specific elements linked to the learning objective of the class. This is followed by the core learning section, with time for technical, creative, personal and professional development. A reflective period at the end of the class during which cool down exercises and discussions can take place gives an opportunity for feedback, future needs and requirements, and any issues, ideas or concerns to be aired. For theoretical classes, (supporting GCSE coursework for example) the emphasis is on exploring the students ideas and thoughts as much as the literal information involved. Developing a passion for dance doesn’t come from being told what to think or how to feel about a dance, yes there are facts about all dance pieces, but true knowledge and development comes from experiencing the movement, the music, lighting, and costumes, letting the dance consume you. I am passionate about dance and I believe my passion shines through in my teaching, igniting a creative spark in my students.
