My experience stems from tutoring my little sister and some of her friends through their A-Level English over the past 2 years. I found the process of sharing my passion for reading with these students incredibly rewarding, and so I am very keen to continue in my teaching career.
Teaching is essentially an interactive process, so with me a lesson will always be moulded around the student, taking into consideration how best they engage with material, as well as prioritising the particular skills that a student wants to develop.
In my experience, the best way to consistently produce insightful, sophisticated written work is to successfully combine a lively, imaginative engagement with a text with a focused, intentional employment of technical knowledge and rigorous argument construction. As such, my lessons will integrate technical and analytical development through a variety of tasks and exercises. Some will take a more structured form, such as enhancing writing skills, expanding technical expertise, and perfecting exam technique. Others will have a looser format, such as discussing how to develop analytic observations, working together on close reading, or exploring any significant contextual information, such as historical, political or philosophical considerations.
Through this range of lesson structures, I aim to achieve a dynamic, engaging learning experience that will not only improve the academic performance of a student, but will also enhance their enjoyment of the subject. Literature has always been a central passion of mine, and I fundamentally believe that developing the ways in which we read and understand literature not only informs the study of many other subjects, but also of life generally.
