Presenting real life situations are the rip of my list in teaching. Students must understand how the ideas and concepts they are learning can be used in real life and demonstrate the effectiveness of those methods. If this is not achieved, it presents an illusive and abstract idea or concept that may hit a brick wall especially during their own personal reading periods.
It's also a fantastic method and one that have proven very effect when you add some humor to your class. Like it is said, that a little laugh cures the tired soul, so it goes with transferring knowledge. A bit of humor relaxes the brains and creates a close to perfect atmosphere for a warm learning experience. It can also help to douse whatever distractions may arise during lessons and help the child to focus.
I emphasize personal development and building relevant qualities for self fulfillment. This I do most times by regularly assigning periods where students prepare to teach in the class and demonstrate their confidence levels and stay well grounded in the lessons.
