I taught high school Mathematics in South Africa for almost 28 years. I was also the Head of Department for half that time. My training, however, was in primary education where I learnt how to teach. I try to explain using concrete representations before moving onto abstract concepts. I also use colour a lot in explanations because life is boring in black and white. Questioning every step in the Mathematical process is important but a negative attitude will not be tolerated. Stating that you don't understand anything is a lie. You need to be specific about what it is that you don't understand in order for me to help you. Everyone CAN DO MATHS including YOU.
