Since retiring as a Laboratory Manager for an Industrial Paint Company I have a desire to get back into private tuition so that I can pass on my knowledge to a younger generation. I have a PhD in Polymer Photochemistry and I lecture a part time course to Post graduates on Organic Coatings at a UK university. I enjoy tuition and focus any lessons on the student asking them what they need from me rather than me dictating what they should learn. During the run up to exams I cover examination questions and discuss how they should be answered. Once I have covered a topic I ask questions to determine understanding and if necessary I go over areas of incomprehension. I ask questions the following lesson to ensure the lessons have gone home. I encourage the students to discuss topics and to be vocal as explaining a topic and doing it well ensures understanding. I find that the concept of moles and concentration is confusing to many people and I use a technique taught to me 45 years ago to ensure the students can feel confident when approaching problems that can involve quite complex calculations. I am well versed in all aspects of A level chemistry and bring in my experience gained during my career as a researcher into paint when it is relevant. I have published over 70 research papers in recognised journals such as Progress in Organic Coatings and Journal of Coatings Research as well as Macromolecules and Photodegradation and Stabilistion.
