It's all about making it relatable!
I believe capturing a student’s interest in a subject and letting them use their imagination to solve problems is the way forward. I haven’t had a traditional course through the education system, but that has only made me appreciate the need for good schooling and strong study skills. I’ve sat the UKCAT and BMAT, with offers from King's College London, Imperial and Southampton to study medicine and can advise students from state schools wishing to enter medicine with applications. I appreciate how difficult exam times can be and look to encourage students to manage their anxieties to achieve good results.
I’ve tutored KS3 Maths and GCSE Biology and Chemistry (including one student who moved up two sets). I've also tutored students for the 11+ entrance exams with a partner who is a lead practitioner in a London school with successful results.
I’ve found analogy to be very important in learning. Making things relatable tends to make them memorable, and I aim to bring this across when I tutor. Studying A-levels taught me the value of exam preparation so I use exam questions from an early stage. I support the curriculum by helping with homework but also setting other homework to reinforce understanding in preparation for exams and beyond. I tutor very informally, and make sure students are comfortable with me so we can address weaknesses they identify. From my experience discipline in studying is needed to bring out the best – the fun comes from getting there!
