During my sixth year of high school, I volunteered as a 1-to-1 tutor in a Higher Maths class, providing additional support to students struggling with the subject. This experience not only helped me enhance my ability to explain complex mathematical concepts in a simplified way but also improved my communication and teaching skills. I learned how to break down difficult topics into more manageable steps, adapting my explanations to suit the individual learning styles of each student.
Working with students of varying levels of understanding also taught me patience and allowed me to develop empathy, as I learned to support those who were struggling with the material. I became more adept at identifying where students were having difficulty and providing tailored guidance to help them overcome challenges. Furthermore, this role strengthened my problem-solving skills, as I often had to find different approaches to explain concepts in ways that resonated with each student. In addition to teaching, I developed stronger time management skills, balancing my academic workload with my tutoring responsibilities. I also gained a sense of fulfillment from helping others succeed, which reinforced my passion for learning and sharing knowledge. Overall, my experience as a tutor was invaluable in helping me grow both personally and academically.
