I have a level 5 TEFL qualification which taught me how to teach students of all ages and from all backgrounds. I am qualified to teach young learners through to professional business students and have the ability to do this online.
Firstly, I would ask you to complete a questionnaire to understand your level of English, to decipher what your interests are and to understand what you believe your strengths and weaknesses are. As soon as this is known I can start to create lessons, personalised to you (unless you’re learning with a school, then I will have to follow the curriculum provided).
Lessons are engaging but in depth. I cover the lesson aims and objectives at the start of the class followed by the PPP method to teach.
A typical lesson would take the following form:
This includes: - a warmer – to see what knowledge you already have - Presentation meaning - for the meaning of the new language - Presentation Form – how to structure the new language - Presentation Pronunciation - how to pronounce the new language - Controlled practice – to practice the new language in a visual task set by the teacher (me) - Freer practice – to practice in pairs or a group and create your own version to the task set out in controlled practice (subject to vary depending on materials) - Cooler - which will allow you to reflect on the new language learnt
I can also teach complete beginner English - if the student knows no English at all. This will be based around teaching vocabulary with pictures and the phonic alphabet to start.
I am currently a Teaching Assistant in a SEND school, so have a better understanding of those who have difficulties with learning.
I think it’s important to bring an essence of fun into the classroom as it helps learners to focus and engage better in tasks. However, I also understand that authentic materials are a must too, as it gives the learner an insight into real world and typical everyday life, whether this be newspaper article clippings, adverts, social media or mini video clips etc.
I have a flexible approach to materials, so if you're not quite understanding I will endeavour to help you and adapt the material where appropriate for the next lesson. I understand that students will make mistakes but this is all part of the learning process and I will encourage you to keep going.
Lastly, I believe idioms are also a great subject to teach as it will develop your knowledge and further help you communicate like a native.
