After having worked in a school as well as teaching sports to young people, I have adapted my teaching and learning style to be mainly verbal. Many children and young adults struggle putting pen to paper effectively, so I prefer to talk answers through with students before they try and write it down. I encourage them to express their personalities and hobbies through their learning, applying the knowledge they have learned in class to tasks they do every day to make it easier for them to understand.
As we go through the lessons I will make notes on a word document of a student’s strengths and weaknesses, which I will then send either directly to them or to their guardian on an email in order for them to better focus their revision, as sometimes the hardest part of independent revision is breaking the topics down and working out what you need to revise the most. Before you start learning with me, I will ask you to give me a brief overview of what you are struggling with, what you would like to get better at, as well as examples of other subjects you enjoy or are doing well in, so I can plan the content of the lesson with your needs in mind. The first lesson with me will consist mainly of getting to know you as a person and will also focus on main weaknesses, giving us a strong foundation going forward so we know exactly what we need to do to get you where you need to be. I often find this makes it a less daunting process and allows you to feel comfortable during our next lessons. Despite the lessons being mainly verbal, I will still accompany them with a PowerPoint presentation if you wish, so you can see and read the points I am making as we go along. I will also be able to send you this link on an email if you wish.
