I open up with an introduction of myself and a basic overview of my specialities. Then I will allow the student to tell me what they feel their strengths and weaknesses are regarding performance skills, analysing text, voice work etc.
During this initial meeting I will ask the student to read a piece of text, poetry or prose, out loud in order to gauge my own understanding of the students level of skills.
As well as this I will ask the student to read a piece of text and critically analyse the meaning of the text, overall themes and their own opinion of the text.
After the Initial meeting I will devise a plan for the next weeks to follow in which I will focus on the areas that need most improvement or attention.
I will set tasks and perform exercises within the sessions for the student to complete in order to improve upon these skills and provide them with the tools they need to develop.
This can be anything from site reading a monologue and pin pointing the authors message, nuances of the characters intention, or, reciting a piece of text with different vocal techniques in order to improve projection/articulation etc.
I will finish each session with a debrief on how the student felt the session went, address any questions they may have, and set small tasks to be completed between then and the following session.
Each new session there will be a short re-cap of the previous lesson in which the student must demonstrate that they understood and absorbed that information.
