I think it is helpful to learn some key English phrases and build on those. It will depend also on your age and ability to learn languages and your current level of attainment. Some people take longer to grasp the basics in a foreign language than others and we need to ensure that whatever the level you don't become disheartened.
I have found that some students prefer to learn set phrases and expressions by rote . This can give students confidence to build on these sentences and extend them . Some students don't want to know why or how a sentence is spoken in a certain way or why we put adjectives before the noun they just want to trust and accept that this is how it works. Others like to explore and understand the detail and intricacies of a foreign language that may be very different in structure to their own. Whatever the motivation, lessons can be adapted to suit the student's needs.
