My lessons are completely designed around individual students. The first session will be a consultation during which we will discuss what specific goals the student has and the best ways for me to help them accomplish those goals. I will then present the student with a lesson proposal which we will workshop until both parties are happy with it and every session thereafter will be based on the student's specific skills, projects, and goals.
For example, a university student came into her consultation with me. She brought the syllabus for a specific class and explained that she was a first-year student and was worried about preparing for exams. During our resulting sessions, we experimented with various studying and note-taking techniques and concluded that she retained information from lectures best when she took hand-written notes and then was verbally quizzed on the content. We worked together to prepare her for her first exam and she was happy with the outcomes. We stopped meeting at that point, as she was able to use the skills we had built together without my help.
When a student comes in with a more specific goal, such as writing a single essay, the process will likely be quicker. We will discuss the student's strengths and weaknesses within the subject and academic writing as a whole. From there, I will work alongside the student to develop the specific skills needed to write a strong essay, whether that includes brainstorming topics, reviewing grammar, organizing ideas, or any of the other various aspects of essay writing that can be a challenge.
My overarching goal as a tutor is to help students develop skills that they can use on their own in the future.
