Having graduated with an international business degree that included studying French, I have had years of experience learning a foreign language and therefore believe that I would be an ideal candidate to teach English to non-native speakers. I have a great understanding of the complexities of our language and, having spent a year abroad in France on Erasmus, I have many international friends that I helped teach English. Most importantly, I have a TEFL, Teaching English as a Foreign Language, Certificate from the TEFL Institute of Ireland. This has taught me more in-depth methods of teaching English to students and fostered my skills and knowledge on language learning which I will bring to the classroom and use to organise classes in the most efficient and effective way possible.

The Direct Method is the main teaching style that I will use as I believe that it is important for my students to be immersed in the target language, English, and learn the language through methods such as mime, demonstration, picture cards, and, as the student progresses in English, new words and phrases can be understood through English description. This encourages students to use the language they are learning naturally, with less focus on translating from their native language. Oral proficiency is the most important aspect to mastering a language, but grammar and spelling for improving literary skills will also be focused on. This will begin basic, as it is important not to confuse or overwhelm students with too many language rules, but once my students have mastered an elementary grasp of spoken English, we will be able to advance reading and writing skills. The Discussing style of teaching, promoting learning through interaction and conversation, will also be important. These styles will not be used strictly, and I will adapt my methods of teaching to the different learning styles of students. For example, these methods will be adapted depending on my students English proficiency, age, and reason for learning or wanting to improve their English. If I have a student that needs to improve their English reading and writing skills for work, I will ensure that more of a focus in on grammar, spelling, and formulating written pieces such as emails or cover letters and CV's if applicable.
