I have an open, friendly and relaxed manner. I first ascertain what the student's needs are as well as interests, strengths and weaknesses. An example of what my reading, vocabulary, and comprehension (English) lesson plans include:
1. I ask how the student is feeling today
2. I introduce the lesson objective. For younger students, this might be introducing consonant-vowel-consonant vocabulary, using digraphs, recognizing rhyming patterns and so on. For older students, there would be vocabulary introduced. I would ask if the student recognizes the word and then we'd go over it, using it in a sentence. We might have an activity matching all the vocabulary words to their definitions
3. I would bring an age appropriate book to share. The student and I could take turns reading. We could work on fluency, pace and expression
4. We could talk about the content of the story as well as go over any vocabulary the student doesn't recognize
5. With younger students, we can go back over the story and pick out the words that rhyme or that follow the concept I am tutoring
6. Lastly, we finish up with the student's feeling/opinion about the story, wrap up, and kindly send the student on his or her way
