Through out my career I have worked in education, primarily in a secondary school and then shortly after at university.
For the last 10 years I have researched and taught in biochemistry but working at a university has allowed me to travel freely back and forth to France, Spain and Japan. I have lived for periods in each of these countries with homes in France and Spain currently.
My language skills have served me in good stead whilst running our international student programs and so I get daily practice as well as more specialised scientific vocabulary.
During lock down I found my self with a gap in my time and decided to use this to tutor initially close friends and then the wider public. Once I managed to tutor an individual from no knowledge in french to conversational fluency over the course of a few months I understood just how much I enjoyed teaching these skills and how much I could offer to those who are interested in starting to learn or are struggling with the learning they are already undertaking.
I found the way in which languages are taught at school to be somewhat lacking in realism and because students are taught to the exam I can see why so few people enjoy the language they are learning or find it usable after the course has ended.
My goal is to make language learning as fun and interactive as possible. Talking about the subjects that matter to you and teaching you the grammar of the language correctly and quickly so that you can hit the ground running and withing a few short hours be able to form any sentence you need with the vocabulary you have. Over time I like to switch to you asking for information in the target language, this enables you to problem solve and think within your target language.
The goal is that you will create new pathways within the brain and have a repository of your target language that you can dip into without the need to translate between English first. I have managed this with many of my current student who have all regaled me with their shock and happiness when they realise for the first time they just comprehend what they are hearing. I find shortly following this comes natural formation of sentences, thought to mouth without impedance from doubt or translation.
I hope that you will give me the opportunity to share this wonder with you and together we can open your world to new cultures and new ways of thinking as language really can determine how we see the world.
