I custom write each lesson to suit the student and meet their targets and ambitions whilst also developing overall targets. I use a fluent mix of practical technical development, music theory and repertoire to ensure that no areas are neglected. Sight reading is the choice of the individual student, and materials are all presented in typed, colour, professional format and delivered electronically, often alongside backing tracks and exercise videos/tracks (created for that student).
Lessons focus on learning through enjoyment of music and not through harsh discipline. I never raise my voice or shout, but do expect a certain amount of practice to be done (usually in the form of a practice log) and students to be prepared for lessons (with obvious exceptions being illness or family emergencies interfering with practice time).
I am happy to coach students towards exam performances, as well as recording or live events, and have a wealth of experience at all levels to draw on to help support and encourage students through often difficult transitions from one performing situation/level to another.
I keep lessons varied over the hour/half-hour in line with current academic research on attention drops, with the subject varying every 10 minutes or so. Centred around a core topic it is easily possible to learn several aspects of music without deviating from the core objective of the lesson. This allows students to maintain focus and develop faster than some more rote based systems.
My students always enjoy lesson and look froward to their times each week. Whether adults playing for fun, or school students working towards qualifications, or even professionals on tour in need of some specialist mentoring, my lessons are highly regarded and successful.
